CARE & HANDLING
Smilax is hand-cut and hand-selected. That means how it's harvested, packed and handled decides whether it arrives event-ready or tired. Here's exactly what we do on our end, and what to do on yours.
Cut the day before shipping. Smilax is harvested the day before it goes out: never pulled from long-term storage. That single day is the difference between vine that lasts through your event and vine that's already spent.
Hydrated, then bagged. Every order is hydrated and sealed in a moisture-locking bag so it keeps its water through transit instead of drying out in the box.
Double protection. The bag goes inside a reinforced box: so the vines arrive sturdy and unbruised, not crushed.
Overnight, always. We ship FedEx and UPS overnight, delivering Tuesday through Friday. Smilax never sits in a warehouse losing days of vase life.
Open it immediately: even if you're not installing for another day. Vines left sealed and bundled generate heat.
Take the vines out of the bag and lay them out loosely. Do not leave them tightly bundled.
Mist generously with a spray bottle of clean water, and mist again once or twice a day until you install.
Store cool and dark. A cooler or cool room is ideal. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat vents, and fans: moving warm air is what dries vine out fastest.
In season, order to arrive 1–2 days before your event. Never the day of: you want a buffer for conditioning and for any shipping surprise.
April through June is off-season. During those months we recommend receiving your Smilax two days before the event so it has extra time to condition.
Vase life is about 8 days for Fresh Southern Smilax and about 6 days for Texas Smilax, kept cool and misted. That's comfortably enough for a rehearsal, the event, and next-day teardown.
Last-minute? Order Monday through Thursday before 8:00 AM EST and it can ship next-day.
Normal: variation in stem thickness and leaf density. Smilax is hand-cut, not farmed to a uniform spec: that irregularity is exactly what gives it its organic look. A few yellowed leaves in a large box is also normal on a natural product.
Not normal: widespread wilting, a dry papery feel across the whole box, or heavy browning. If that's what you open, photograph it and contact us the same day and we'll make it right.

Fresh Southern Smilax lasts about 8 days and Texas Smilax about 6 days when kept in a cooler or cool room away from sunlight and heat, and misted regularly.
Yes: a cooler is the ideal storage. Keep it away from fans and direct airflow, which dry the vine out.
